  • Lowered carbon emissions by 0.4%, while business grew by 9%.
  • 90% of the electricity consumed across operations is now attributable to renewable energy sources, up from 85% in 2021.

Announced that over 50% of European shipments now come in reduced, recyclable delivery packaging, such as a paper bag or cardboard envelope, or no added packaging at all through its Ships in Product Packaging program (which has totaled 700 million shipments in Europe since 2019). (April 2024)

Corporations bought a record 46 GW of solar and wind through PPAs (power purchase agreements) in 2023, up 12% from 2021, according to BloombergNEF. About 45% of corporate PPAs were in the Americas and 33% in Europe, with European growth the most robust (up 74% over 2022 to 15.4 GW). The U.S. made up largest market at 17.4 GW (38%), but shrunk 16% compared to 2022. CEF Member Amazon was the largest single corporate clean energy buyer in 2023 at 8.8 GW. (Feb 2024)

DAMILER TRUCK Is deploying its first hydrogen fuel cell powered trucks for customer trials. Starting in mid-2024, five hydrogen-powered semi-trailer tractors will be tested in long-haul applications in Germany by five partner companies, including CEF member Amazon. (Jan 2024)

Members of the Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance sent a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reiterating the need for strong heavy-duty vehicle emission standards to meet national climate and economic goals as well as corporate sustainability goals. The letter, the Alliance’s second, also underscored that the growing number of companies committed to zero-emissions trucks demonstrates that these are both operationally and financially viable. The Alliance represents 33 U.S. companies that own, lease, or operate more than 2.5 million fleet vehicles, and includes CEF Members Amazon, CBRE, and Siemens. (Dec 2023)

Zero-Emission Vehicles in Emerging Markets Initiative (ZEV-EMI) More than 30 major companies have forged collaborative agreements in emerging markets as part of the ZEV-EMI. This public-private action aims to accelerate investments along the zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) value chain in India, then to replicate the model in Mexico and worldwide. The ZEV-EMI partner companies announced (Dec 2023):

  • Establishment of a national data-sharing platform for optimizing planning and catalyzing infrastructure investments in India.
  • Task forces for a large e-freight pilot deployment in India.
  • Launch of ZEV-EMI in Mexico.
  • Release of the ZEV-EMI collaboration models & best practices collection


Since the launch of the ZEV-EMI initiative at COP27, more than 30 companies have expressed support for the initiative, including CEF members Amazon, Bloomberg, General Motors, and PepsiCo. (Dec 2023)

Announced it has invested in 78 new solar and wind energy projects so far in 2023, including 13 new projects in the Asia-Pacific, 10 in Texas, and its first in South Korea. The company also built its first brownfield project, which will repurpose a polluted coal mine site in Maryland into a solar farm. This is expected to be the largest solar farm in the state, with more than 300,000 solar panels, and avoiding more than 133,000 tons of CO2 per year. (Nov 2023)

Announced all delivery packaging in Europe will now be recyclable paper bags, cardboard envelopes or boxes, including third-party selling partners. Clean Energy Procurement Academy This project aims to equip companies with the technical readiness to explore and adopt clean energy. The Academy will combine online and in-person training and educational resources to help accelerate the integration of clean energy into global supply chains (for example, how to boost supply chain companies’ capacity to invest in renewables). This project was initiated through the Clean Energy Buyers Institute and with support from Google.org, and is co-founded by CEF Members by Amazon, Apple, Meta, PepsiCo, and REI; and by Nike. Added 39 new renewable energy projects in Europe so far in 2023, adding more than 1 GW of clean energy capacity to grids across Europe. These include 15 rooftop solar installations on Amazon facilities and 24 utility-scale wind and solar projects. Once operational, this will bring total clean energy capacity from the company’s 160 renewable projects in Europe to 5.8 GW. (Oct 2023)

More than 250 companies and organizations, coordinated by the Global Renewables Alliance, issued an open letter calling on world leaders to agree at COP28 on a global target to triple renewable electricity capacity to at least 11,000 GW by 2030. Launched The Sustainability Solutions Hub, a new resource to help its sellers with their product and packaging sustainability efforts, including Climate Pledge Friendly, Amazon Renewed, and Ships in Product Packaging. The Hub will launch in six countries by the end of October. The company also announced it will purchase carbon dioxide removal of 250,000 metric tons over ten years, its first investment in direct air capture (DAC), from the carbon capture firm 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum. 31 companies with significant commercial fleets sent a letter to U.S. governors in 9 states urging them to accelerate and support the shift to zero-emission vehicles by adopting the Advanced Clean Trucks (ACT) and Advanced Clean Cars II (ACC II) rules in their respective states. Together, the two rules require increasing rates of sales for zero-emission light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles over the coming years. The companies, including CEF members Amazon, CBRE, and Siemens, are part of the Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance, and represent over $1.2 trillion in annual revenue and collectively own, lease, or operate more than 2.7 million fleet or networked vehicles in the U.S. (Aug 2023)

Smart Freight Centre (SFC) Exchange Network Published a Proof of Concept (PoC) Evaluation Report, a first step in establishing the SFC Exchange Network to promote data sharing between transport value chain actors and increase carbon transparency. The report assessed three key criteria: the feasibility of technical implementation, peer-to-peer data exchange, and willingness to share data. It also explored options for future governance and assurance frameworks. The results show the need for future efforts in the industry and the PoC “provided a momentum and promising results to continue towards a full build.” CEF members Amazon and Dow are participants and contributors, and CEF member McKinsey is a knowledge partner. IRCAI / AWS The International Research Centre on Artificial Intelligence (IRCAI) and Amazon Web Services (AWS — a subsidiary of CEF member Amazon) announced the launch of Compute for Climate Fellowship, a first-of-its-kind global program supporting entrepreneurs and startups applying advanced cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) to create new solutions that address the climate crisis. The fellowship will fully fund the building of proof of concepts of innovative ideas focused on climate risk and resilience, food security, biodiversity and conservation, climate-related health, circular economy, and ESG analytics. Applications submitted before 31 August will be considered for development this year. (July 2023)

ZEV-EMI and E-FAST Fifteen companies, including CEF members Amazon and PepsiCo, have come together to advance the electrification of the truck market in India. Under the Zero Emission Vehicles Emerging Markets Initiative (ZEV-EMI) and the Indian government’s Electric Freight Accelerator for Sustainable Transport (E-FAST) these companies will work together to establish favorable market conditions for electric truck deployment under a national task force. This includes aggregating demand, building industrial capacity and financing instruments, planning for large-scale pilot implementation, and supporting policymaking for e-trucks in India. The companies also announced several pilot projects and signaled demand for more than 5,000 electric trucks by 2027, and 7,700 by 2030. (July 2023)

Announced that beginning in 2024, the company will update its Supply Chain Standards “to require regular reporting and emissions goal setting” of suppliers. The company said it will use its scale, investment, and innovation to date to provide suppliers with products and tools to help them reach their goals, including helping select suppliers transition to carbon-free electricity. Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) This new alliance, founded by the Aspen Institute, Patagonia, Tchibo, and CEF member Amazon, was formed to enable companies to access zero-emission shipping solutions that are not currently available. Through ZEMBA, freight buyers will accelerate the commercial deployment of zero-emission shipping, enable economies of scale, and help minimize maritime emissions. ZEMBA members will offer committed demand to build confidence among investors, carriers, ship owners, and producers of zero-emission fuels and renewable energy. Freight buyers are invited to join ZEMBA as a way to access zero-emission shipping. (March 2023)

Recycled Content Standard Annex A (SCS Standards) — The SCS-103 Certification Standard for Recycled Content adds this new annex focused on the electrical and electronics equipment sectors, setting a minimum threshold for recycled content in the full product and allowing for a product-level claim. This raises the bar for recycled content in consumer electronics products, expanding beyond just component materials. Development of the annex is being led by a diverse multi-stakeholder group that includes: CEF members: Amazon, Dell Technologies, HP, and Microsoft, as well as The Center for the Circular Economy at Closed Loop Partners, De’Longhi, The Ellen MacArthur Foundation, Logitech, Phillips, and The Recycling Partnership. End-to-End GHG Reporting of Logistics Operations This new guidance, released by Smart Freight Centre and WBCSD, in partnership with over 30 companies, advances the quantification and sharing of logistics emissions and supports the logistics industry as they move toward net-zero. The guidance is designed to enable companies to better understand and track their logistics emissions on a granular operational level and to quantify the footprint of end-to-end logistics emissions, from supplier to final customer. It builds upon and complements two existing frameworks, the Smart Freight Centre’s Global Logistics Emissions Council Framework 2.0 (for logistics emissions) and WBCSD’s Pathfinder Framework (for product life cycle emissions). Emissions First Partnership — Ten corporations have come together to offer new objectives and principles for consideration to update electricity greenhouse gas emissions accounting systems to accelerate grid decarbonization. Objectives include increasing clarity on emissions impact of electricity, improving data, and increasing stakeholder confidence that emissions reduction claims are accurate and effective. Amazon Studios announced it will replace diesel generators with batteries from Moxion Power, which Amazon invested in earlier this year. Generators account for about half the carbon emissions from the average movie, and produce air pollution and noise. Batteries will address all three of these. (Dec 2022)

U.S. companies now account for 14% of all installed solar capacity in the U.S., according to the new Solar Means Business 2022 report. Through June, U.S. businesses installed nearly 19 GW of on-site and off-site solar capacity, double the 9.4 GW installed through 2019. CEF member Meta has the largest corporate solar portfolio in the U.S., growing from 177 MW in early 2019 to 3.6 GW in 2022. CEF members Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft had the second, third and fifth largest installed capacities. (Dec 2022)

Amazon Web Services pledged to be “water positive” by 2030, returning more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations. To achieve this it will use four key strategies: increasing water efficiency; using sustainable sources of water, such as recycled water; providing used water for community reuse, such as irrigation; and water replenishment, such as by restoring watersheds and bringing clean water to water-stressed communities. The Green Shipping Challenge launched during the World Leaders Summit of COP27. Countries, ports, and companies made more than 40 announcements on issues such as innovations for ships, expansion in low- or zero-emission fuels, and policies to help promote the uptake of next-generation vessels. Announcements included:

  • CEF Member Amazon signaled its demand for zero emissions ocean shipping by 2040 and reviewed its several initiatives supporting this transition, including investments, partnerships, and fuel purchases;
  • The U.S. is launching a Green Shipping Corridors initiation project to support green shipping corridors involving developing countries, and is also launching a Green Shipping Corridor Hub, an online platform with tools to streamline green shipping corridors globally;
  • The U.S. is facilitating green shipping corridors with Canada, Korea, and the UK.
  • The U.S. will develop a national action plan for maritime decarbonization beginning in 2023.

In a parallel announcement, the UK pledged to roll out green maritime links with the U.S., Norway, and the Netherlands, and agreed to launch a special Green Shipping Corridor Task Force with the U.S. to bring sector experts together and encourage R&D. (Nov 2022)

Asia Clean Energy Coalition (ACEC) ACEC aims to drive corporate clean energy procurement in Asia, accelerating its overall demand and supply. ACEC will strategically improve the policy and regulatory environments for clean energy, in both national and regional Asian markets. The coalition seeks to align the world’s leading clean energy buyers, project developers and financiers, to help policymakers, utilities and energy regulators innovate and deploy cost effective clean technologies across the Asia-Pacific region. AMAZON / USAID — Launched a public-private partnership to boost climate funding for women. Amazon will commit $50 million to USAID’s Climate Gender Equity Fund, a new climate finance facility designed to remove systemic market barriers that prevent women and girls from accessing climate finance. The Fund will provide grants globally to businesses and organizations working on women-led climate solutions. (Nov 2022)

Announced it will invest more than €1 billion ($974.8 million) over the next five years in electric vans, trucks, and low-emission package hubs across Europe, accelerating its effort to achieve net-zero carbon by 2040. It aims to more than triple its electric van fleet from its current 3,000 to over 10,000 by 2025. The company is also investing in EV charging facilities and “micro-mobility hubs” focused on new local delivery methods like electric bikes and on-foot deliveries. (Oct 2022)

New Secretariat to Address Connected Device Emissions — Global climate consultancy, the Carbon Trust, and technology companies Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Samsung and Sky, are developing the industry’s first specification for measuring, accounting for, and decarbonizing the emissions associated with connected devices while being used by customers. Connected devices, which include phones and laptops, used a total of 500 Terawatt hours in 2020. The group aims to produce an accurate baseline for reporting energy efficiency improvements and establish rules for matching electricity consumption with renewable energy generation, as well as applying technology to optimize energy use of connected devices by consumers. The fund, one of the largest private investment portfolios in water and climate, will focus on climate-resilient water and sanitation solutions that will help provide lasting access for 100 million people across Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Has signed an agreement with renewable fuels technology Infinium to provide “ultra-low carbon electrofuels,” made from CO2 and renewable power, beginning in 2023. This fuel will replace diesel fuel for approximately 5 million miles of travel per year. Amazon previously invested in Infinium through Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund. (Sept 2022)

Announced it is expanding its renewable energy portfolio globally, with an additional 2.7 gigawatts (GW) of clean energy capacity across 71 new renewable energy projects. This includes Amazon’s first renewable energy project in South America: a 122 megawatt solar farm in Brazil. These new projects expand Amazon’s total renewable energy projects to 379 across 21 countries and represent 18.5 GW. (Sept 2022)

NEW CORPORATE COMMITMENTS TO HIRE REFUGEES — 46 companies that are part of the Tent Partnership for Refugees committed to hire 22,725 refugees in full time positions in the U.S., helping to advance the economic and social integration of refugees across the country. This is the most significant set of business commitments in support of refugees on record. CEF member commitments include: Amazon will hire at least 5,000 refugees; Hyatt will hire 500; Marriott International, 1,500; and PepsiCo, 500, all over a three year period. The U.S. Department of Commerce and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative launched the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF) Upskilling Initiative, a public-private endeavor to support training and education in digital skills for women and girls in 8 countries, including Brunei, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Fourteen U.S. companies, including CEF members Amazon, Apple, Cisco, Dell Technologies, Google, HP, Mastercard, Microsoft, and Visa, will each provide 500,000 or more digital upskilling opportunities by 2032, such as providing training in data science, cyber-security, AI, and robotics; providing female small business owners with toolkits to help with website planning, social media, and marketing; and supporting digital leadership and entrepreneurship training in rural areas. Signed an agreement with Plug Power, a hydrogen and fuel cell company, to supply 10,950 tons of green hydrogen per year for Amazon’s transportation and building operations starting in 2025, enough to fuel the equivalent of 30,000 forklifts. Amazon will use this to replace gray hydrogen, diesel, and other fossil fuels and meet its net-zero pledge by 2040. (Aug 2022)

Open Supply Hub (Open Apparel Registry, Inc.) — Provides an open data platform to improve data standardization and offer insights about production facilities and global supply chains. The new tool, funded by CEF Member Amazon along with Target, German development agency GIZ, the Laudes Foundation and Humanity United, will provide standardized name and address data and universal IDs for production facilities around the world, using data populated and used by companies, civil society organizations, factory groups, supply chain service providers, and other stakeholders. The Hub is designed to help support collaboration across global supply chains, while also streamlining and improving companies’ readiness for ESG reporting requirements. (July 2022)

The Ceres-led Corporate Electric Vehicle Alliance (CEVA)—which includes CEF members Amazon, CBRE, and Siemens—and the NAFA Fleet Management Association (NAFA) have sent a letter to State leaders and the Federal Highway Administration with recommendations to guide the build-out of EV charging infrastructure, "particularly as states look to spend funds from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program…” The letter, includes recommendations that planners (July 2022):

  • Site charging stations by analyzing commercial traffic/goods movement patterns and ensure that sufficient charging is placed near densely populated and/or urban areas.
  • Separate commercial charging sites for light-duty and medium/heavy-duty vehicles, when possible, to reduce operational disruptions; Standardize charging technology and station design for medium- and heavy-duty vehicles.
  • Coordinate roaming agreements between networks and simplified, universal payment methods.
  • Place charging stations for light-duty vehicles no more than 50 miles apart; Co-locate charging stations with other amenities like food and restrooms.

Launched the first large-scale deployment of its new Rivian-designed Electric Delivery Vehicles (EDVs) into service in select US cities, following a successful pilot launch earlier this year. Amazon’s total order of 100,000 of the highly specialized, zero-emission vehicles is slated to be in service by 2030, saving millions of tons of carbon per year, according to the company. Electrification of Amazon’s fleet is a key element of the company’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions across operations by 2040, and a market driverfor the broader transition to EVs. Indirect Spend Risk & Responsibility Alliance — Addresses human rights and emissions reduction in indirect spend categories (i.e., those not directly linked to revenue-generating products) by working with indirect procurement teams on best practices in responsible sourcing. The alliance is chaired by Oliver Hurrey (CEF Advisory Board Member and chair of the Sustainable Procurement Pledge) in partnership with TwentyFifty and SupplyShift. It currently includes 12 leading companies, including CEF Member Amazon, but more are welcome. The priority categories agreed upon by the Alliance include: packaging/recycling & waste services; logistics/distribution & warehousing; marketing services/promotional items; technology & professional services; PPE/laboratory consumables; FM/cleaning & maintenance. More than 100 large companies and investors made a business case to the U.S. Congress and the Biden Administration last week for ambitious federal action on climate. The collective effort, called LEAD on Climate 2022 and organized by sustainability nonprofit Ceres, attracted participants—including CEF members Amazon, HP Inc, Marriott International, Microsoft, Netflix, PepsiCo, Siemens, and Unilever—that count a total of $1.6 trillion in annual revenue and $4.6 trillion in assets under management, and more than 3 million employees across all 50 states. Through two days of virtual meetings, they asked lawmakers and administration officials to (May 2022):

  • Meet the urgency and scale of the climate crisis with ambitious federal investments to accelerate the transition to affordable, secure, domestic clean energy.
  • Seize the economic opportunities to lead the world in clean energy manufacturing and deployment to create jobs, spur innovation, strengthen supply chains, and reduce costs and volatility for businesses and consumers. 
  • Tackle inequity by targeting climate and clean energy investments in disadvantaged, rural, and frontline energy communities.

Partnership for Carbon Transparency (PACT) — WBCSD announced it had achieved a major milestone in developing the Pathfinder Network (launched at COP26), a decentralized network infrastructure for sharing product-level carbon emissions data across value chains and industries: the first successful data exchange across different technology systems by CircularTree, IBM, SAP, and CEF member Siemens. PACT next plans to add new tech components, including from CEF members Amazon and Microsoft. It expects the Pathfinder Network to be available for use by the end of the year. (April 2022)

Announced a  $10 million commitment—part of a  $100 million Right Now Climate Fund—to  conserve, restore, and support sustainable forestry, wildlife, and nature-based solutions  around the world. This first commitment, in collaboration with  The Nature Conservancy, will support family forest owners in the Appalachian Mountains by creating a new income source to restore and conserve forest lands, protect wildlife, and help remove millions of metric tons of carbon from the atmosphere. The Appalachian Mountains investment is expected to achieve a net reduction of up to 18.5 million metric tons of CO2 in the atmosphere by 2031. (April 2020)

Amazon announced a set of new sustainability commitments, which include plans to become net zero carbon by 2040, achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030, invest $100 million to restore and protect forests, wetlands, and peatlands, and deploy 100,000 fully-electric delivery vehicles by 2030. The company also partnered with Global Optimism to create “The Climate Pledge,” which aims to boost corporate action to help achieve the goals set out by the Paris Agreement 10 years early.
