2030 Goals:

  • Reduce one gigaton (one billion metric tons) of carbon emissions from our customers’ footprint 
  • Reduce product carbon emissions by nearly 50%
  • Achieve carbon neutral operations, which includes a 90% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions and a 97% in Scope 3 emissions per cooling ton across its global operations 
  • Deliver zero waste to landfills (54% of global operations have reached zero waste as of 2020)

  • Reduced 93 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent from customers’ emissions since 2019 as part of company’s Gigaton Challenge;

2024

CORPORATE KNIGHTS Released its 20th annual Global 100 List, ranking the world’s most sustainable companies along 25 indicators, out of 6,000 public companies with revenues of over $1 billion. In 2024, top-ranked firms allocated 55% of their investments to sustainable projects, up from 47% last year, and compared to just 17% of investments of publicly traded companies with more than $1 billion in revenue. The top ranked company was Sims Ltd, an Australian waste management company that moved up from #14 in 2023. CEF Members in the Global 100 include: Schneider Electric (#7), Trane Technologies (#23), Cisco (#64), HP Inc. (#67), Apple (#71), Unilever (#76), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (#81), and Prologis (#87). (Jan 2024)

Launched Trane Autonomous Control Powered by BrainBox AI, a new artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud-based service that provides building owners and facility managers a new tool to reduce energy consumption and achieve decarbonization goals. The tool uses AI to identify and implement optimization actions, using variables such as predictive weather data and occupancy trends.

INFLUENCEMAP —  Released its 2023 Global Leaders list identifying 27 companies globally that have achieved best practices in climate policy advocacy, including: engaging positively, and actively, aligning climate policy with science-based pathways to achieve Paris goals, and not demonstrating a “highly negative” indirect influence through industry associations. 16 of 27 are headquartered in Europe, six in Japan, and five in the U.S.  CEF members in the list include Apple, Salesforce, Trane Technologies, and Unilever. In a letter to the North Carolina governor and General Assembly, 22 companies, universities and trade associations urged elected officials to consider policies and programs that will increase access to cost-effective, clean energy technologies.  The signatories also affirmed their support of North Carolina’s goal to reduce emissions by 70% by 2030 and achieve 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050.  Companies include CEF members Trane Technologies and Unilever. Approved the use of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as a sustainable alternative to diesel fuel in Thermo King global cold chain solutions, including refrigerated truck and trailer product lines. HVO reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 90% and particulate matter by more than 30%. (March 2023)

2022

Announced it would purchase low-carbon steel from Nucor and U.S. Steel, covering 20% of Trane’s annual steel purchases, and reducing annual CO2 emissions by nearly 16,000 metric tons. The steel will be used to build high-efficiency heat pumps and air conditioners for homes, and thermal management systems for commercial buildings such as schools and data centers. (Nov 2022)

ACTION DECLARATION ON CLIMATE POLICY ENGAGEMENT More than 50 global companies, with almost $900 billion in annual revenues, committed to ensuring that their climate policy engagement, and that of their industry associations, helps address climate change, rather than stall it. The declaration also includes the monitoring and disclosing of climate policy alignment for signatory companies and their major industry and trade associations. Announced it is the first in its industry, and one of just 11 companies worldwide to date, to have its net-zero carbon emissions targets approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This includes a 90% reduction in GHG emissions across its global operations (scope 1 and 2), and a 97% reduction in emissions per cooling ton from the company’s largest source of emissions—Scope 3 customer use of the company’s products. The latter feeds into Trane Technologies’ “Gigaton Challenge,” a commitment to eliminating one billion metric tons of GHG emissions from its customers’ footprint by 2030. (May 2022)

Over 90 total companies, municipalities, states, and other organizations have joined the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Better Climate Challenge, committing to reducing portfolio-wide Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by at least 50% within 10 years. Signatories will collaborate to identify pathways for improvement, and the DOE will provide technical assistance and convene peer-to-peer solution exchanges. CEF members GE, Honeywell, International Paper, Siemens, and Trane Technologies are among the signatories. (March 2022)

27 companies that collectively generate over $1.2 trillion in annual revenue and have 1.4 million employees sent an open letter calling bold climate action a “business imperative” and urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to enact the Build Back Better Act’s climate and clean energy provisions. They said the provisions would “help spur private sector investment at the scale needed” to help them meet their long-term climate goals and would greatly affect opportunities for exporting low-carbon technologies, products, and expertise. The letter was organized by the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (C2ES), and signatories include CEF members Duke Energy, Ford, GE, HP Inc., Schneider Electric, and Trane Technologies. THERMO KING — Trane Technologies subsidiary Thermo King says it will be the first transport refrigeration brand to use a lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant as standard in its truck and trailer units. About `650,000 metric tons of CO2e will be avoided by fleet units annually, a nearly 50% reduction. Thermo King says the refrigerant is the “most sustainable” one in the market. (Jan 2022)

The US State Department, through Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, and the World Economic Forum launched the First Movers Coalition, a public-private partnership to accelerate green technologies’ commercial viability and decarbonize 8 hard-to-abate sectors by 2030. The 32 founding corporate signatories, accounting for over $8 trillion in market capitalization, will sign purchasing commitments tailored to create market demand for the technologies. CEF members Amazon, Apple, Bank of America, Boeing, and Trane Technologies are signatories. Breakthrough Energy is the Primary Implementation Partner. (Nov 2021)

14 countries—including the U.K., Germany, Brazil, and Indiasigned the largest ever global commitment on appliance energy efficiency: a new Product Efficiency Call to Action, launched by the UK government and the International Energy Agency. The countries committed to doubling the energy efficiency of 4 appliances accounting for 40% of global electricity consumption (air conditioners, refrigerators, industrial motor systems, and lighting) by 2030. The commitment is supported by the SEAD initiative and Clasp, with the Climate Group's EP100 initiative of 129 companies and partners (including CEF members Schneider Electric, Siemens, and Trane Technologies) also announcing support. TERRA CARTA SEAL RECIPIENTS — HRH The Prince of Wales’ initiative and Corporate Knights awarded their inaugural “Terra Carta Seal” to 45 companies that are putting “Nature, People and Planet at the heart of” economic value creation. All recipients have aligned with the Terra Carta charter, committed to achieving net zero by 2050 or halving GHG emissions by 2035, and committed to standardizing their reporting metrics. A major new coalition, “America is All In,” launched to mobilize bold climate ambitions nationally and uphold the federal government’s commitment to climate action—specifically to cut U.S. emissions in half or more by 2030 and reach net-zero by 2050. Co-led by UN Special Climate Envoy Michael Bloomberg, the coalition effectively merges We Are Still In and America’s Pledge and is the most expansive effort ever assembled to support climate action in the U.S., involving U.S. businesses, cities, states, tribal nations, schools, and faith groups, health care organizations, and cultural institutions. They have pledged to improve operational energy efficiency by 3% annually (Alliance to Save Energy 3% Club), set a 100% renewable electricity target for its global operations by 2040 (RE100), and to double energy productivity by 2035 (EP100).
