  • Upgraded Scope 3 target to reduce these emissions 55% per million USD of value added by 2030.
  • Continues to use 100% renewable electricity in offices and for directly-managed production.
  • The combined impact of emissions reductions initiatives across the company’s four priority levers (energy efficiency, vehicle electrification, clean mobile power, and renewable energy) in 2022 resulted in a 30% lower Scope 1 and 2 footprint value than would have otherwise been reported.
  • Brought net Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to zero by investing in nature-based solutions that retain and capture carbon. For 2022, this totaled 1.146 million metric tons of CO2 equivalent.
  • Supports creators who incorporate sustainability into their storytelling, with 70% of members having watched one or more of these stories.
  • Committed to use at least one EV on screen in all directly managed productions, in partnership with GM, to help promote their use.

Clean Mobil Power Initiative CEF members Netflix and The Walt Disney Company, along with RMI and climate tech accelerator Third Derivative, have launched this initiative to identify and deliver cost-competitive, zero-emissions mobile power at scale for the entertainment industry, including developing alternatives to diesel generators. The initiative will bring together representatives from leading production studios with equipment suppliers and cleantech manufacturers. 5-10 “innovative startups” are invited to apply to participate in a clean mobile power accelerator program, with selection in early fall. 2022

More than 100 large companies and investors made a business case to the U.S. Congress and the Biden Administration last week for ambitious federal action on climate. The collective effort, called LEAD on Climate 2022 and organized by sustainability nonprofit Ceres, attracted participants—including CEF members Amazon, HP Inc, Marriott International, Microsoft, Netflix, PepsiCo, Siemens, and Unilever—that count a total of $1.6 trillion in annual revenue and $4.6 trillion in assets under management, and more than 3 million employees across all 50 states. Through two days of virtual meetings, they asked lawmakers and administration officials to (May 2022):

  • Meet the urgency and scale of the climate crisis with ambitious federal investments to accelerate the transition to affordable, secure, domestic clean energy.
  • Seize the economic opportunities to lead the world in clean energy manufacturing and deployment to create jobs, spur innovation, strengthen supply chains, and reduce costs and volatility for businesses and consumers. 
  • Tackle inequity by targeting climate and clean energy investments in disadvantaged, rural, and frontline energy communities.

Released a new cross-genre collection called One World, Infinite Wonder that includes over 170 series, films and specials that honor the planet and showcase sustainability. “This collection reflects the fragility of our planet, but also how we can help it heal,” said Netflix’s Sustainability Officer Emma Stewart. NETFLIX — Released updates on its internal emissions reduction efforts as part of its Net Zero + Nature commitment to achieve net zero GHG by the end of 2022, including:

  1. Reducing electricity consumption by conducting energy efficiency audits, identifying opportunities for energy and cost savings across our offices and facilities in the US - which is where we use the most electricity; 
  2. Decarbonizing our electricity supply by enrolling all our offices and facilities in 100% clean energy programs where available; 
  3. Piloting new zero-carbon power technology to decarbonize our productions, including green hydrogen fuel cells in the UK (starting with Bridgerton Season 2) and mobile batteries in the UK, Canada, and the US;
  4. Preserving, restoring, and protecting natural ecosystems by vetting and buying high quality carbon credits from critical landscapes; and 
  5. Engaging with leading standard-setting bodies and have received third-party validation of our target of 45% reduction by 2030 below 2019 levels.

Founding members include Amazon, Disney, Google, Microsoft, Netflix, Salesforce, Unilever, and Workday. Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA) — A new alliance launched by RMI and Environmental Defense Fund to accelerate aviation decarbonization by driving investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), catalyzing new SAF production and technological innovation, and supporting member engagement in policy-making. NETFLIX — Announced its “Net Zero + Nature” plan, committing to achieving net-zero GHG emissions by the end of 2022 and every year thereafter. The company pledged to:

  • Reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 45% by 2030
  • By the end of 2021, neutralize emissions it cannot reduce internally through investments in projects that protect existing, at-risk natural carbon sinks like tropical forests
  • By the end of 2022, invest in regenerative projects that remove carbon from the atmosphere by restoring ecosystems that capture and store carbon, including grasslands, mangroves, and healthy soils.
